A skin cancer awareness month reflection on the FDA finding most people skipped over.
I’ve spent most of my career in regulated industries. Water treatment. Food manufacturing. Biotech. The kind of work where you actually read the ingredient list, because it is my job to know what goes in and what comes out.
When I see a regulatory body flag something as “insufficient safety data,” I read that as more than bureaucratic red tape. I’ve watched that phrase precede actual problems enough times to take it seriously.
So when the FDA classified 12 common chemical UV filters — including oxybenzone, the active ingredient in most drugstore sunscreens — as “not GRASE” (not Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective), my reaction wasn’t surprise. It was recognition.
This is a pattern I’ve seen before.
The finding most people missed
In its proposed sunscreen order, the FDA reviewed the active ingredients in over-the-counter sunscreens. Of the ingredients under review, only two made the GRASE cut: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
